From September 2009, we are encouraging speakers to become registered as Ambassadors with their local STEMnet Contract Holder. This scheme provides CRB checking and insurance for all registered Ambassadors. For student and teacher organisers in schools, STEMnet will be their first port of call to find a speaker.
Most probably, the first café you deliver will be on a topic close to your area of expertise. However, you will almost certainly be able to speak on a variety of topics, so use your imagination! You don't have to be an expert; just prepared to talk with the students who come to the cafe. It will help if you can be creative and choose catchy, quirky, attractive titles for your talk. (See Topics and Titles). Remember, you won't just be talking to science students, nor to just a single year group.
You won't need to do anything regarding the school venue or organising the event itself just liaise with the school, respond promptly, turn up, talk and inspire!
Anyone with something interesting to say can be a speaker at a Café Sci. Think about others you know who could offer their expertise to such events. This is also useful in case of an emergency when you cannot make it to a café and need a stand-in. Spread the word! This website is a resource for new ideas and a medium for communication with other speakers.
