Love and the sub-concious mind

11th August 2009

Speaker: Gaston Byamugisha, Lecturer in psychology, Kyambogo University

The power of the sub-conscious mind in love was the spark for the students’ favourite Café Sci topic. What is love? Why do people fall in love? How can we avoid falling in love?

According to Gaston, falling in love doesn’t happen by chance. People who fall in love are thinking about love and their sub-conscious mind is working to identify the person whose qualities they like.

Love is a good thing: for friends, family and partner but it can be tricky when one is not ready. Teenage love is filled with romance but doesn’t last; boys and girls do not mature at the same rate emotionally.

Student’s questions

  • Can two people fall in love at the same time?
  • How come sometimes love comes from the people you hated most?
  • Why do girls take longer to forget when the relationship dies?
  • What pushes men to watch pornography?
  • Why do men rape girls?
  • How is FGM (female genital Mutilation) related to sexual arousal?
