Café Sci book - call for submissions.

The European SciCafe project will open a web portal early in the autumn. We are proposing to put a ‘book’ on the portal which can be downloaded by anyone. The idea of the book is to provide an interesting, lively, informed account of what Science Cafes are and where they are going.

The style of the book should not be too conventional, so we are looking for personal, humorous, unexpected and thoughtful elements that will keep people reading it. It will also contain photos, drawings and maybe even cartoons. Between each chapter there should be a short (maybe one page), personal account of a Café in many different countries throughout the world.

The book will not be written by one author. It will be assembled in a collaborative way, using tools to be included in the portal, so that it is a "live" book, that may continue to grow after publication. New associates may contribute (and this may be a motivation for the association) and it will also be an added value to the portal.

We are interested in

1) The motivations. Why did you start this experience? Was it inspired by another café, TV, etc?

2) Your story, comments. Who are the organizers? How many people abandoned? How many joined? Did the audience change over time? Do you know of other experiences that failed, and in this case, why?

3) The social context. What are the themes? What is your public? Do you know of other cafès, which are different?

4) The method. How do you choose the themes, experts? Advertisements, publicity, web sites, social web tools, TV and radio, etc.

These points should not be taken as a survey, but rather as a colloquial talk. It would be good to have personal reminiscences.

To put the initial version of the book together we would like to have your contributions by the end of July – they don’t have to be very lengthy, but they should be personal.

Please send them to me at cafe-sci@dial.pipex.com

Many thanks,

Duncan Dallas
