Café Sci July Update

Welcome to the final newsletter of this school year. And what a year it has been: Crippling snowstorms, a coalition government, artificial life, World Cup fever and a heat wave, not to mention the all new Cafe Sci format!

By this time of year you are probably feeling pretty run down, tired and ready for your well earned holiday. Spare a thought for teachers of the future who could very well be feeling this way into their 80s or even 90s. In the same week as the government announces it plans to increase the pension age every 5 years, scientists reveal a genetic test to allow people to find out their chances of living to 100. As our life expectancy increases, the age of retirement will probably be raised higher and higher and careers last longer and longer. People may choose to have more than one career in life, they may go back to university at the age of 60 to retrain in a whole new field. So much of this area of science is still unknown but the more we learn, the more fascinating the future becomes.

As we look forward to the start of Café Sci’s 6th year in September, we are very proud of its achievements. None of this would be possible  without the passion of our students, dedication of our teachers and support of all our other partners so we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all and wish you all a wonderful summer break. Long live the heat wave!
