Concerted College - GMOs

Concerted College

Hosted a cafe on:-

GMOs

Date: 16th November 2009

Speaker: Peter O’Pedun

Only seven students were able to come to this café, due to examinations. However, the small numbers closed the gap between the speaker and the students and the discussions had a more personal touch.

One billion of the world’s people suffers from hunger; GMOs could imcrease production by 30%. Peter told the students that the side-effects of GMOs are not known although many fear that they have the potential to create new diseases.

The students thought that if GMOs will reduce hunger, that is a good thing but scientists should weigh the consequences of GMOs very carefully. Is it possible that GMOs will increase dominance of rich countries over poor countries since they are the ones with the technology? We should not trust scientists: although GMOs are good to a large extent, we cannot leave our future to chance!
