Students launch first Ilkley Science Festival

Students at Ilkley Grammar School have organised their very own science festival, over the weekend of November 14th and 15th.

Inspired by the famous Ilkley literature festival, the students decided they would like to hear top scientists instead. The obvious solution – organise their own science festival.

Backed by Leeds University, the students have attracted six leading scientists to Ilkley, to talk on subjects as diverse as ‘Why are we addicted to chocolate?’ to ‘How robots are being used in medicine’.

Ilkley Grammar’s headteacher, Gillian James, said ‘I am proud that the students are organising this event. I believe that it will strengthen the school’s links with the community and promote the school’s standing as a specialist school for humanities and sciences’. Student Hannah Bourdon said ‘This is a fantastic experience for us. We hope the people of Ilkley will back this event and enjoy hearing really interesting talks from cutting-edge scientists. We hope that this event will be held annually and keep growing until it becomes as big as the Ilkley Literature Festival’.

Any profits raised from the event will go to support school expeditions, including this year’s expedition to Ecuador.

Tickets can be obtained from the school office (01943 608424), by email (sales@ilkleygs.ngfl.ac.uk) or online (www.ilkleygs.ngfl.ac.uk)
