Kitante Hill School - Aliens and planets

Kitante Hill School

Hosted a cafe on:-

Aliens and planets

16th June 2009

Speaker: Gerald Muhumza

This was a lovely café. The speaker who had agreed to head the discussion cancelled at the last minute but Gerald Muhumza rescued the café with a profound knowledge on the subject gained through personal interest and in-depth reading.

‘Planet’ comes from Greek, meaning ‘wanderer’; in Lugandan, the word is ‘sengendo’ – journey. Gerald talked about how to distinguish a star from a planet (a star blinks and a planet does not), the difference between astronomy and astrology, how the sun makes its energy and much more. There were surprising and searching moments when some students wondered whether ‘we are not living?’ and how all of these and all of us came to be, which led the discussion into the Big Bang theory and the origin of species.
